Where was His Dark Materials season 2 filmed?

HIS DARK MATERIALS is keeping fantasy fans gripped as season 2 of the hit BBC/HBO series continues tonight (Sunday November 15, 2020).

But as the latest season of the popular fantasy show continues, we look at where the adaptation of Phillip Pullman's book has been filmed.

Where was His Dark Materials season 2 filmed?

His Dark Materials season 2 was filmed primarily at Wolf Studios in Wales.

This is because His Dark Materials is made in-part by the Cardiff-based Bad Wolf production company which has access to studios in the Welsh capital.

Filming throughout seasons 1 and 2 also took place in Oxford, where both Lyra and Will are from.

According to IMDb, other locations also include London, Bristol and the Welsh Brecon Beacons.

The world of Cittàgazze, which is the setting for the opening episode of Series Two, looks like an ancient city somewhere on the Mediterranean coast.

Speaking to the RadioTimes, production designer and executive producer Joel Collins explained: “I looked at 120 different towns, went by Bonn, France, Italy, Morrocco, Croatia, Spain other kinds of European places.”

But because no location could be found that fitted the bill, Cittàgazze was created through an enormous set constructed at Wolf Studios in Cardiff, made from plaster and wood.

What book series is His Dark Materials based on?

His Dark Materials is a trilogy of fantasy novels by Philip Pullman.

The series includes the novels Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass.

The basic premise of the series follows the coming of age of two children – Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry – as they journey their way through a series of parallel universes.

Pullman's novels were widely acclaimed by critics and readers alike.

The books won a number of awards, including the Carnegie Medal in 1995 for Northern Lights and the 2001 Whitbread Book of the Year for The Amber Spyglass.

Does His Dark Materials follow the Golden Compass?

No, the Golden Compass was actually an alternative name for the book Northern Lights, published in 1995 and the first in the Dark Materials trilogy.

A film of The Golden Compass was made in 2007 and starred Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig and Kathy Bates.

The Golden Compass movie focused on just one of the books in the trilogy.

However, because no sequels were made to The Golden Compass movie, the BBC series is different in that it tells the story of the entire trilogy.
