Is it just us or does it feel like it’s been ages since we last saw the ladies of Litchfield?
The world hasn’t gotten new episodes of the hit Netflix series since the summer of 2018. It’s a bummer but, thankfully, Orange is the New Black is on its way back to television screens — and it’s coming back soon. So when will Orange is the New Black Season 7 premiere, you ask? Here’s what to know.
OITNB comes back in July
That’s right. Go buy some popcorn and keep the remote close because there are only a couple of weeks left until the show airs its seventh and final season on July 26.
Netflix released the trailer for the forthcoming, highly-anticipated season on June 26, and it looks like the show will go out with a bang. The season picks up immediately after Piper Chapman’s release from prison. While you’d think it’d be a positive time for her, it appears to be the total opposite.
She makes copies in an office, meets with a probation officer for drug tests, and struggles to make friends.
“Life likes to test you, and when you make a bad choice, living with what you’ve done can be its own punishment,” a voiceover says.
A spinoff could happen
Although Orange is the New Black is coming to an end, this might not be the end for the ladies of Litchfield. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate TV Group chairman Kevin Beggs told the press in November 2018 that the studio behind the Netflix series had been discussing a sequel series.
“We’re really proud of the long run that Orange Is the New Black had,” Beggs said. “It remains one of Netflix’s most-watched shows. We’re ending on a high note. Keep in mind we own that series and will be distributing it for years to come. We’re already in discussions and, when the timing is right, we’ll talk further with [creator Jenji Kohan] about a potential sequel.”
The spinoff could go in many directions
If the sequel series does come to fruition, it could go in several directions. It could follow Taystee Jefferson, who is now serving a life sentence for a crime she didn’t commit. There’s also Blanca Flores, who is facing deportation after earning early release. And, of course, there’s Chapman’s love interest, Alex Vause.
As you probably know, Vause has four years left of her sentence, so fans are eager to see what happens to her and how her relationship with Chapman pans out now that she’s a free woman. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Laura Prepon suggested that the fate of her character could be a bad one.
She said that while Vause tries to “stay on the straight and narrow for Piper,” she has to do to what she has to do to survive.
“I think Alex sees the reality of the situation and knows how much more time she’s in there for. I think in the back of her mind, she knows she’s going to have to do some things to survive that aren’t going to lend itself to taking classes. And it’s unfortunate,” she explained.
“Alex is really smart, but it’s just one of those realistic things where, especially now with Piper gone, she’s going to have to survive,” Prepon continued.
But let’s just see how Season 7 unfolds for now. Remember, you can check it out on July 26. Be there or be square.
