Susanna Reid and Alastair Campbell invited Remain campaigner Anna Soubry and Brexiteer Andrew Bridgen onto Monday’s Good Morning Britain to discuss the Government’s temporary visa scheme which will make it easier for foreign lorry drivers to work in the UK. However, as the guests clashed over whether Brexit was solely to blame for the labour shortages, Reid called on the Government to train more British drivers.

Reid addressed Bridgen: “We currently have ministers in charge, the Brexit vote was back in 2016, you might not want to blame Brexit but the fact of the matter is we have lost thousands of workers who have gone back into the EU.”

Interjecting, Soubry quipped: “Millions [of workers],” before Reid noted: “Millions but in this particular sector thousands of drivers.

“Why didn’t the Government plan for this? One of the reasons people voted for Brexit was because they didn’t want to lose out on those jobs.

“But why didn’t the Government think, ‘Okay in 2016 we’re going to lose these thousands of workers we need to get British workers skilled up, better paid, better conditions driving those HGVs?”
