Season 4 of This Is Us is almost here (finally). If you caught the teaser promo for what’s to come, a slew of new faces has taken over the set. Does this mean your usual Pearson crew won’t be around much?
Will the regular cast have story arcs in season 4 of ‘This Is Us’?
Fret not, fans. The Pearsons are still in-tact. This Is Us writers, cast, and crew loves red herrings, which is why the season 4 promo trailer emphasizes new faces (to divert your attention away from what you already know). Don’t hate; appreciate.
That means you’ll see Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) further navigate their marital differences, and children, post-election. Thank goodness things are looking up for this family after a tumultuous season 3.
Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) may have an ominous future ahead of them after the revelation of “her.” For now, the new parents to baby Jack have more stories to tell. Still, keep your eye on them.
Season 3 ended Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Zoe’s (Melanie Liburd) relationship, but that flash-forward showed Kevin as a father. Surely season 4 will explore at least some of who his son’s mother is. Is it Zoe? Only time will tell.
Finally, The Big Three wouldn’t exist without “Papa” Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) Pearson. There is a lot more to their love story. Hopefully, season 4 takes viewers down that road.
The writers have left room for more on Jack’s brother, Nicky (Michael Angarano), because he’s at Rebecca’s side in the flash-forward season finale.
Miguel’s (Jon Huertas) fate, however, isn’t solidified. He wasn’t shown in the season 3 flash-forward. Writer, Isaac Aptaker, previously told The Wrap, “It does seem like you’d expect that Miguel, her husband, would be the one there by her bed and yet he’s not there. So I would say that’s not an accident.”
Honestly, as long as we don’t have to re-live William’s (Ron Cephas Jones) or Jack’s death (ever again), all is good in the world.
Who is joining the cast of ‘This Is Us’?
As you may have seen in the teaser video, the new cast includes appearances by Omar Epps, M. Night Shyamalan, Jennifer Morrison, Timothy Omundson, Nick Weschler, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Asante Blackk, Bahara Golestani, and Julian Silva.
“It’s so strange, isn’t it? How just like that a complete stranger can become such a big part of your story,” Rebecca says to Jack in the trailer. “It’s actually kind of terrifying, you know? How a single cross with one person you’ve never met can change everything.”
As with much of the show, public knowledge of each new character won’t come to fruition until the new episodes air. Based on the clip, they’re all a part of each pivotal character’s story. How? You’ll have to watch to find out. That’s how the This Is Us team operates. Again, we’re not mad about it.
Are the new characters part of a season 4 twist?
“The magic of this show is that there’s still so much story to tell, and that is exciting,” Moore said on E! News. She knows how the story ends and “feels good about it,” so die-hard fans can breathe easy. The scripts are in good hands.
Sullivan agreed saying, “It is almost as if we are telling a new story, and fans will be very surprised.”
For now, writers are mum on season 4 twists or how the new characters affect the central cast’s arcs. If we’ve learned nothing else about This Is Us over the last 3 seasons, it’s that the show leans towards the unexpected.
“It feels like we’re making it with love,” Ventimiglia, explained. “That is what makes people really embrace the show, (and say) ‘Those are my stories up on that screen. It’s not just Jack and Rebecca or Kevin, Kate and Randall. That’s my story.’”
Grab the tissues and brace yourself. This Is Us returns Tuesday, September 24 at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
