Shadow and Bone recently premiered its first season on Netflix, introducing viewers to a new fantasy world. Fans quickly wanted to know every detail about the show, including everything about the cast behind it. Sujaya Dasgupta plays Zoya in the series, but who is the actress?

Who is Sujaya Dasgupta?

In Shadow and Bone Sujaya Dasgupta plays Zoya Nazyalensky, an Etherealki soldier of the Second Army.

An Etherealki soldier is a Grisha whose powers lie in the manipulation of natural elements; they are also known as Summoners.

The Second Army is unique for being made up of these magical beings, unlike the First Army which doesn’t have any Grisha within it.

The series is based on a trilogy of novels by Leigh Bardugo, with Zoya only appearing in the book Six of Crows.

The actress behind the character, Dasgupta, recently spoke about the importance of the source material for her character.

Speaking to comicsbeat.com, Dasgupta said: “I think we’re really lucky to have Leigh’s book there at hand. She left us such a fantastic blueprint on which to base these characters, and we’re very lucky to have all of that information as a resource.”

She added: “I felt we’re very privileged to have that and Leigh as well. [She was] just always at hand for support and gave any answers to any questions that we had and really valuable insight all the time.”

Before Shadow and Bone, Dasgupta had worked in several television projects, most recently being seen in I May Destroy You in 2020.

The star also played a recurring character in Casualty back in 2018, playing Jamila Vani across four episodes.

Outside of Shadow and Bone, she is arguably most well known for her work in the series Guilt from 2016.

In the series, Dasgupta played Veena Patel, a journalist eager to get the story to make her career.

Other than these roles, Dasgupta can be seen in the shows Press, The Good Karma Hospital, Doctors and Red Wolf.

The actress mainly keeps to herself, keeping much of her private life away from fans.

This includes her age, which she has not revealed outside of the knowledge that her birthday is February 2, but the year is not known.

Currently, Shadow and Bone has not yet been renewed for a second season, with fans holding their breath for a sequel.

The show has quickly picked up a dedicated following of fans, making a second series more likely.

As the show is based on an original book series, the series has plenty of material to work with.

Leigh Bardugo, the novelist behind the series is still writing more stories in the Shadow and Bone universe, so in the meantime, there is plenty of content for fans to sink their teeth into.

Shadow and Bone is available to watch exclusively on Netflix.
