Riverdale season 5: Fans in turmoil as premiere ‘seals’ two devastating breakups

Riverdale: The CW tease season five episodes in promo

Season five of Riverdale is finally among us after the series became one of the first to shut down at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. While many fans of the CW series, which is also available on Netflix, were hoping for a lighthearted distraction from the global health crisis, season five could be the steamy teen drama’s darkest outing yet.

Viewers watched in horror this week as two fan favourite relationships broke down in the highly anticipated season five premiere of Riverdale.

Archie Andrews (played by KJ Apa) and the gang were finally able to enjoy their senior prom this week after the series was significantly delayed by the ongoing pandemic.

Unfortunately, the drama of last year’s instalment hung like a shadow over the glamorous affair, including Archie’s scandalous kiss with Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart).

After waiting nearly a year for Riverdale’s return, Archie threw a wrench in the series’ most popular pairings by telling his girlfriend Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) about his brief betrayal.

Veronica took the brunt of the heartbreak when she decided not to tell Betty’s boyfriend, Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), about the scandal.

However, a flood of tears and a ruined prom soon followed, seemingly confirming ‘Varchie’ had come to an end – at least until the series takes its seven-year time jump.

One Riverdale enthusiast said: “Veronica absolutely breaking my heart over here. Camila Mendes gave such a knockout performance this ep!”

Meanwhile, others complained about yet another instalment of outlandish teen drama for which the series has become notorious.

Another wrote: “The Riverdale writers really blew the perfect opportunity for some good classic teen drama angst, but nope.

“They decide to go the no drama route and Veronica & Archie are going to pretend everything is okay to spare Betty & Jugheads relationship! Disappointed is an understatement.”

Veronica will be putting on a brave face for the time being, but fans will have to tune in next week to find out just how long the facade lasts.

Several more devoted fans live-Tweeted this week’s second most essential TV event after the televised inauguration of new US President, Joe Biden.

Viewers were aghast when episode one, The Climax, pushed the ongoing mystery with the Videotape Killer aside to make way for not one, but two failing relationships.

Elsewhere, prized couple Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) and Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan) may have to call it quits after digging up some old family beef.

The Blossom’s infamous Maple Syrup Blood Feud made its return this week when they discovered Toni’s grandma revealed her unconditional hatred for Riverdale’s influential family.

Many fans were understandably heartbroken by the sudden development, though others felt the twist came out of nowhere considering we hadn’t been introduced to Toni’s Nana before.

Over on Reddit, one viewer complained: “Wait…I thought Toni lived with Cheryl? How come her grandparents JUST found out that they are dating?”

And another disgruntled fan said: “This Choni drama makes no sense. Why would this just now come up?”

Riverdale has certainly built up a reputation for shocking the audience with every new episode, but both ‘Varchie’ and ‘Choni’ ditching their endgame status in the season premiere could be too much for some to bear.

Riverdale season 5 continues Wednesdays on The CW, and the following Thursday on Netflix.
