Diego Luna rose to international fame after his depiction of Felix Gallardo on Netflix’s Narcos Mexico. The actor has landed a huge new role which sees him swapping the theme of gang and drugs for a star-studded animated series.

Actor Diego Luna will be joining the star-studded cast of the animated series Maya and the Three which is set to premiere on Netflix later this year.

According to Deadline, the series will follow a rebellious warrior princess named Maya (played by Zoe Saldaña) who was about to celebrate her 15th birthday when things took an unexpected turn for the worse.

She was also going to commemorate her coronation when the gods of the underworld make a jaw-dropping revelation – which causes everything to suddenly change.

Due to her family’s secret past, she was forced to pay the ultimate price as her life now belonged to the god of war.

If she refuses to follow their demands the whole world will suffer including the lives of her friends and family.

The series will see Maya go on a quest to carry out an ancient prophecy which predicts the coming of three great warriors, who are destined to help her save the world by defeating the gods.

With nine episodes, the mythical animated series was inspired by modern-day Caribbean culture as well as Maya, Aztec and Inca mythology.

Starring alongside Diego will be Queen Latifah, Stephanie Beatriz, Rita Moreno and Wyclef Jean.

Although Diego has landed this huge new role, there’s still some uncertainty surrounding the release of Narcos Mexico season three as Netflix have yet to announce a premiere date.

The gripping crime drama followed the dangerous life of kingpin Felix Gallardo (Diego Luna).

Season two came to a close in February and patient fans have been left wondering about Felix’s fate after the shocking finale.

After every cartel member left his leadership, he was caught by the authorities and eventually jailed – which meant his reign in Mexico was over.

The series was set in the 1980s and was the real-life depiction of the convicted Mexican drug lord, Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo.

Fans witnessed the tense scene as he was in jail and visited by DEA agent Walt Breslin (Scoot McNairy) where the criminal predicted an epic battle between the rival cartel members.

With a dangerous war looming, viewers can anticipate season three to be an explosive one.

Other fans have predicted the upcoming instalment could see Amado Carrillo Fuentes (José María Yazpik) takeover now that Felix is in jail.

After he seized control of the Juárez Cartel by murdering his boss Rafael Aguilar Guajardo, viewers have already witnessed how power-hungry he is.

Although network bosses have released a season three trailer, it cryptically ends with the words coming soon.

Fans can look forward to a brutal showdown as Narcos Mexico’s executive producer, Eric Newman hinted the Sinola Cartel “could be a factor” in the highly anticipated season.

However, will be updated with new information about a potential release date.

Maya And The Three premieres on Netflix later this year.
