Maya Stepney (played by Louisa Clein) left Emmerdale in a dramatic storyline on the ITV soap back in 2019. This came after she was charged with grooming and sexually abusing teenage student Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant). But, could she return to the Emmerdale village in upcoming weeks? has everything you need to know.

Maya left Emmerdale around two years ago in a gripping storyline that saw her charged with grooming and sexually abusing then 15-year-old Jacob.

The character made her debut in March 2018 and left in November the following year.

Teacher Maya first met Jacob when she began dating David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden), Jacob’s father.

This allowed her to grow closer to the teenager, who she also taught at school and coerced him into a sexual relationship.

The abusive relationship carried on for months before Maya was found out by Tracy Metcalfe (Amy Walsh), Priya Kotecha (Fiona Wade) and Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi).

The story finally came to an end when Maya was arrested and Jacob was questioned by the police.

Maya was put on trial and was soon found guilty of illegal behaviour with a minor.

While in court, Maya insisted that she hadn’t slept with Jacob, arguing they had only sent each other text messages.

The abusive teacher was sentenced to a year in prison, which Jacob left – who was in love with Maya – devastated.

Viewers saw the teenager unable to comprehend he had been abused by Maya and continued to send letters to her while she was in jail.

In the same year, Maya was released from prison early after just five months and it was revealed she was pregnant.

Maya gave birth to a baby boy and left it outside David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) and Jacob’s house on Christmas Day with a note asking them to look after him before leaving the country.

In January 2020, David was proven to be the father by a DNA test and when he contacted Social Services they tracked Maya down and she said she was happy for her baby to stay with her ex.

She’s not been seen on the soap since 2019, but there’s a chance she could return especially after Jacob’s girlfriend, Leanna Cavanah (Mimi Slinger) was killed by David’s new beau Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu) earlier this week.

And when the truth is finally exposed, Maya might feel the need to return and take over custody of her child if David is incapable of keeping Theo safe.

Perhaps Maya’s comeback storyline will be a custody row? After all, the writers of Emmerdale did not kill her off so she will return to the Dales sometime in the future.

Newly-weds Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi) and Liam Cavanagh (Johnny McPherson) also won’t want to see Maya return, as she could attempt to break-up the happy couple as revenge for Leyla catching her out.

In a recent interview Roxy Shahidi, who plays Leyla on the soap, revealed her character would do anything to get Maya out of her life if she did make a dramatic return to the village.

“I think it would make Leyla’s blood run cold and I think she’d do absolutely everything in her power to get rid of her as quickly as possible.

“I don’t think she’d necessarily try and kill her again, but I think she’d stop at nothing to get rid of her to be quite honest,” Roxy told Metro.

This week’s Emmerdale is available to watch on ITV Hub.
