The titular house in The Haunting Of Bly Manor doesn’t look too spooky the first time you encounter it in the Netflix series. It actually seems, dare I say it, warm and inviting. It’s not until the mist sets in and things start going bump in the night that the house reveals its true ghostly nature. Everything about Bly is a mystery, right down to its real location.
No spoilers, but in the final episode, Carla Gugino’s character ominously says that if anyone were to fly to England and attempt to visit Bly Manor it wouldn’t show up on a map. “You would find no such place by that name,” she says. Creepy, but also accurate. Bly Manor is not a real house like Blenheim Palace in England, or even the Biltmore Estate in America. It’s as made up as Downton Abbey. Episode 8 makes a brief reference to Hampshire, a county outside of London, but that’s all the info we get.
The show itself was filmed in Vancouver. Bly Manor star Victoria Pedretti told The New York Post that exterior shots used a lot of green screen. “The inside of the house was a set, but when we were shooting exteriors, we were in front of a large blue screen.” So finding the real house (haunted or not) might actually be impossible. It could be anywhere. We just don’t know!
Don’t be fooled by the Zillow listing for Bly Manor, by the way; that’s just some hilarious and clever advertising from the folks at Netflix. They even included increasingly scary photos and the following description:
This latest installment of Mike Flanagan’s gothic anthology series is based on the Henry James novella The Turn of the Screw. In the original story, Bly is located in another county just outside of London—Essex. (Before you ask, yes, Essex is that county in England with a low-key trashy reputation comparable to New Jersey and/or Florida. It produces particularly colorful Love Island contestants.)
Maybe this is for the best. Do you really want to be visiting a haunted house in this climate? Even if you were to find the real Bly Manor IRL, there’s no guarantee you’d be able to leave…
