Good Morning Britain fans divided over Alastair Campbell as he debuts as host

Good Morning Britain viewers were left in two separate camps after Alastair Campbell’s debut as host.

Tony Blair’s former press secretary, 63, took up Piers Morgan’s old seat alongside Susanna Reid, and will remain there until Wednesday.

He and Susanna are helping to mark Mental Health Awareness Week.

Alastair has been frank about his own mental health struggles in the past, revealing the impact his depression has had on his life and family in his 2020 book, and opened up on the show about his love for cold water swimming.

He is now the latest guest host to work alongside Susanna since Piers stormed off set after a row about Meghan Markle.

But viewers aren’t quite sure what to make of the new face.

"To the chief of GMB WHY. There is no one as good as Piers no matter how hard you try," one wrote on Twitter.

Another said: "I’m appalled that Alastair Campbell is on the show."

While someone else posted: "When I first read of Campbell presenting GMB, I thought it was a joke […] Complaints galore to OFCOM."

"I hope you haven’t booked Alastair Campbell for the week #cringe," another said.

But others were more impressed with Piers’ new replacement, writing: "Alastair Campbell doing a great job. Get him back for more."

And another penned: "Enjoying Alastair Campbell’s appearance – he should do it more often."

"Saw Alastair Campbell was presenting on GMB. Brilliant. Great improvement GMB," someone else said.

Alastair has already made waves with Susanna, and ahead of his appearance gave her a stern telling off for referring to the Prime Minister as ‘Boris’ instead of ‘Mr Johnson’.

Susanna had taken to her Twitter account to tease her new co-host’s arrival, writing to her 827,000 followers: "What a week for @campbellclaret to join the @gmb desk.

"Wins for Boris, Labour’s future (and past), Scotland’s independence… All up for some rather lively debate."

The 63-year-old quickly corrected Susanna for failing to refer to the Prime Minister by his surname, as is customary for global politicians.

"His name is Mr Johnson. Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson! And tho he had wins he also had defeats! I shall of course be fair and balanced!!" Alastair clapped back.

But Susanna didn’t seem to mind being called out, as she retweeted the comment to her own page.

However, the former spokesperson wasn’t letting it go as things turned sour on-screen, as Alastair asked Susanna: "Can we please call the Prime Minister Mr Johnson?"

Susanna demanded to know if Alastair also called Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer by his surname.

Alastair was caught a little off guard by the shot, and stumbled briefly before insisting that everyone should call him by his last name.
