Emmerdale’sJoe-Warren Plant has opened up about his predictions for Jacob Gallagher’s romantic future, following the death of love interest Leanna Cavanagh.
In our new and exclusive interview series, Soap Stars Coming Clean, OK! will be finding out all the juicy gossip about what happens when the cameras stop rolling, as well as the actors’ favourite memories with their co-stars so far.
This week it’s Joe’s turn. The 19-year-old actor plays Jacob on the ITV soap and has been a resident in the village since August 2010. He also appeared on the thirteenth series of Dancing on Ice.
Here, the footie-loving, music-obsessed actor reveals what it’s like behind the scenes on Emmerdale with “iconic” duo Matthew Wolfenden and Roxy Shahidi, lifts the lid on his characters chances of romance and explains why he’d love Cara Delevigne to make a guest appearance in the village…
What’s your favourite memory on the show so far?
My favourite memory on the show so far was probably doing the storyline where Jacob ran away 10 years ago. I’d not long been on set and it was at that moment where I really started to get an idea of how high-calibre a show Emmerdale really is. I was so young at the time so I was kind of oblivious to everything, but whilst I was doing that storyline I noticed the amount of people it takes to make something happen like this. From the cast, to the crew, and everyone in production.
What do you always have in your dressing room?
Music! I can’t function properly without music, so I always make sure I have my phone and some earphones with me when I arrive in my dressing room. I choose a playlist to accompany my mood throughout the day. When we are doing intense storylines I use music as a way to calm my nerves before heading out to film. I love a wide range of music so you’d catch me singing (or trying to sing!) to pretty much anything – apart from country. I’m not too keen on country. Hip Hop is my favourite, especially the 90’s genre.
Who’s the messiest member of the cast?
In all honesty, I think we have a pretty clean cast. However we were filming the other day and one cast member had left their half-rotten banana peel on set which we had to move because it was being seen in shot! [Laughs.]

Who’s your funniest co-star/s?
There’s not one member of the cast that isn’t funny in their own way. I can’t wait for the greenroom to be reopened so we can all have lunch together again. Saying that, I’m always in stitches whenever I’m on set with Matthew [Wolfenden] and Roxy [Shahidi]! Those two are such an iconic double act. They make me laugh so much, I’m surprised I don’t have a six pack!
What’s the best night out you’ve ever had with your co-stars? Tell us about it…
Since I turned 18 in lockdown I haven’t been able to experience a proper night out with the gang yet. However, the Soap Awards are always such a buzz! Just the thought of getting dressed up in your best attire, meeting the cast from other shows and having a boogie at the end of the night is such a vibe!
Which celebrity would you love to see doing a guest role?
Either Cara Delevingne or Jaden Smith. I think both seem really down to earth and fun to be around and I think they’d fit in the village pretty well [laughs].
Who are you closest to from the cast?
I play charity football quite regularly with Jay Kontzle, Danny Miller, James Hooton and Jack Downham. A lot of the crew are involved too and we have a group chat for our weekly 5-A-Side match. It’s always great to finish the day off with a bit of a run around after a long day at work. We all use it as a way to let off steam and reset.
If your character could have a romance with anyone in Emmerdale, who would you like it to be?
I don’t think Jacob is going to be ready for romance anytime soon after Leanna’s death. Plus, he’s already been with most of the girls in his friend circle and it’s never really ended well. Someone new would have to move into the village for Jacob to be interested.
If you could play another character on Emmerdale, who would it be and why?
In my opinion, David’s character is the funniest in the village, so I think it’d be pretty fun to play the wacky shop keeper for a change… Even though he is my Dad! If not David then either Marlon or Paddy.
What’s the strangest fan encounter you’ve ever had?
I’ve never had any super-strange encounters. However, I find it quite amusing when people are just awkwardly staring at me. I try to make some sort of contact with them because I’ve been in their position a few times meeting idols of mine and there’s nothing worse than feeling like you can’t approach someone. I try my best to make them feel comfortable.
Do you ever have to go out in disguise to stop people recognising you?
No never! [Laughs.] As an actor, being recognised is something that comes with the territory and at the end of the day without the fans none of us would have a job. I think it’s important to give back to those who watch the show and it’s actually really humbling. Meeting fans of the show always puts me in a happier, more positive mood.

If you weren’t an actor, what would you be doing? What was your plan B?
No doubt I’d probably be doing sports or music. I used to play the drums and I’m currently trying to learn the guitar. I’d like to get to a stage where I can start making music of my own. However, when I was in school I had the opportunity to take music seriously but never really applied myself which is something I heavily regret. I suppose it’s never too late to make a start.
It’s not unheard of for actors to swap soaps… if you weren’t in Emmerdale, what soap would you like to be in?
To be honest it’s hard to see myself in any other soap but Emmerdale. I enjoy it so much and I’ve been there so long now it’s just second nature to me. If I had to pick… I guess I’ve always wanted to visit Australia, so maybe Home and Away or Neighbours!
