Charles (played by Kevin Mathurin) wasn’t pleased to see Esme (Eva Fontaine), whom he resented for abandoning their son Ethan (Emile John) as a child. The Emmerdale vicar was left stunned once he found that Esme had been suffering from postnatal depression before she fled and that she had also become pregnant with their daughter. She informed Charles that she gave birth to Naomi, and urged him to visit her. Later on, Charles decided he’d keep all this, as well as a letter from Esme, a secret from Ethan. Could a vengeful Naomi have been tipped off by her mother about where her absent father lives? If so, she might attempt to kill Charles for not being around while she grew up.
Thursday’s instalment of the ITV soap saw Esme following Charles, and as he turned to see her, she commented: “It’s good to see you.”
The mystery of who Charles has been communicating with was revealed as the vicar coldly responded: “Can’t say the same.”
He admitted he was surprised she had shown up, adding: “You’re fond of no-shows, Esme.”
Charles raged at his ex for not being there for their son and letting him down as he grew up.
Initially, he refused to agree to let Esme see Ethan, accusing her of never trying hard enough in the past.
But he was baffled by some of the secrets Esme had carried with her.
“I didn’t understand what I was feeling,” she explained as they discuss what had happened between them.
She told him she had been suffering mentally after Ethan was born.
“All I knew was that I needed my husband, you, Charles, who had been my rock.
“But you weren’t there for me and then you just let me go.”
Eventually, she admitted a huge secret. “We have a daughter, Charles. Ethan has a sister.”
She explained how she was worried about how Charles would react about her being pregnant and told him that their daughter, Naomi, had been given up for adoption and that she tracked her mother down.
The two now share a relationship and Esme told her all about Charles.
It’s possible that Naomi had joined Esme to visit Charles and was hiding while her mother explained all to her dad.
“How would you feel about meeting Naomi?” Esme had asked Charles during their chat.
“Not sure, I’ll have to think about it,” he replied.
Naomi could have arrived with her mother to meet Charles, and hidden in the woods as her parents caught up.
If so, she may have been extremely hurt by the vicar’s reaction.
After discovering Charles isn’t interested in seeing her, she might have been left fuming and out for revenge.
Could he now be in danger as his estranged daughter potentially knows where he lives?
She might be waiting to make her move and attack Charles for not helping Esme through her postnatal depression and cheating on her.
This, on top of Charles’ refusal to get to know Naomi, could be enough for her to want to take drastic action.
Furthermore, the Emmerdale resident later told Harriet Finch (Katherine Dow Blyton) that he wasn’t going to reveal what he had found out to Ethan.
Naomi, stalking Charles, might decide to follow him to his home and attack him.
Charles might be left brutally injured if he is caught off guard and left for dead.
Esme might even have been involved, agreeing Naomi could take her revenge if Charles didn’t cooperate in the way they’d hoped.
Seeing him reject her and later decide to lie to her brother, Naomi and Esme could have decided Charles needs punishing.
The episode ended with Charles walking away from Harriet, alone – the perfect opportunity for Naomi to strike.
Will someone be able to find him before it’s too late?
Emmerdale continues on Friday at 7pm on ITV.
