Ed Sheeran spotted filming new music video after 18 month hiatus – dressed as a vampire

HE’S the world’s most famous pop star – instantly recognisable from here to Timbuktu after the biggest selling albums of the last decade and seemingly endless sell-out tours.

So Ed Sheeran performed an extraordinary feat when he successfully kept himself almost entirely out of the spotlight for nearly 18 months – taking a lengthy hiatus with his wife Cherry in order to enjoy time with their new baby.

Aside from a social media post announcing the birth of daughter Lyra Antarctica last summer and an appearance at a memorial service for a music industry pal earlier this year, Ed has remained almost totally unseen.

But if he had hoped to remain incognito any longer, it would have taken a better disguise than the one pictured here.

On a busy high street, Ed, 30, donned fangs and horror make-up.

He soon attracted the attention of fans and passing shoppers in Catford, South East London, where he took to the rooftops to film scenes for what is expected to be his comeback single later this year – following a return to the recording studio during lockdown.

He later joined a host of ghoul and zombie pals outside a nearby café, in between waving to taken-aback fans who barely recognised Ed with his Dracula-esque eye shadow, bleached hair and a gaudy pink suit.

An onlooker said: “It was obvious something big was happening, there were camera crews and security cordons set-up.

“But you still don’t expect a superstar to be on the roof of the shopping centre.

“He’s so recognisable straight away, and at that point he was just in his normal gear with his guitar so word got around fairly fast that Ed was filming – but he was cool about it, he was waving to some kids and laughing about it all, it was pretty surreal.”

Another added: “There were quite a lot of fans later on and security were a bit anxious but he just knew how to do it, he posed for a few photos and then politely said he had to get back to work.

“He’s obviously planning for a big comeback. At times you could hear music playing which sounded great, but it wasn’t something I’d heard before.”

The two-day shoot took place on Thursday and Friday last week — with Ed on set until long into the night on the first day to film night scenes with his co-stars.

But despite the gruelling schedule he found time to pause for a break on day two, treating pals to a Nando’s which was brought to the set by Deliveroo for the famished cast of ghosts, ghouls and supernatural monsters.

Ed’s fans had long anticipated a return to the limelight would come later this year, after he teased a single standalone track this Christmas, with lyrics dedicated to his daughter.

His prolific run in the charts has made him a seemingly permanent fixture in the music industry since his breakthrough album ‘+’ back in 2011, with mammoth tours, TV and radio appearances alongside a raft of major awards.

But in recent years, after falling in love with his now wife Cherry Seaborn, he has made efforts to take extended breaks in between projects. These have involved removing himself from social media and travelling away from the showbiz limelight to enjoy family time.

Announcing his last break in December 2019, he told fans he needed to “live a little more” before writing fresh tunes.

In a statement online, he said: “Hello all. Gonna go on another break again.

“The Divide era and tour changed my life in so many ways, but now it’s all over it’s time to go out and see some more of the world.

“I’ve been a bit non-stop since 2017 so I’m just gonna take a breather to travel, write and read. I’ll be off all social media until it’s time to come back.

To all my family and friends, see ya when I see ya – and to my fans, thank you for always being amazing, I promise to be back with some new music when the time is right and I’ve lived a little more to actually have something to write about.”

It’s not yet known exactly when Ed’s next release will emerge, with industry sources saying he does not have to rush to release tracks until he is totally happy with them.

It’s thought the single will be the first of a new album — his fifth full-length studio record — after previously selling in excess of 26 million albums and 100 million singles worldwide.

His groundbreaking success, includes the most lucrative tour of all time, with overall sales estimated at around £560million.

Singles including Shape Of You, Perfect, Castle On The Hill and Thinking Out Loud have propelled him to household name and superstar status.

Ed has also penned huge hits for a host of other A-listers including Justin Bieber, One Direction and Westlife.

It’s no wonder he felt he needed a break.
