The EastEnders stirrer is no stranger to threatening people, but now she has blackmailed her nephew, Liam Butcher (played by Alfie Deegan). Although she might see him as harmless, it’s become clear since he arrived back on the Square that Liam has got himself mixed up with some dodgy schemes. On Thursday’s episode of the BBC soap, Janine (Charlie Brooks) tried to get him to use Tiffany Butcher’s (Maisie Smith) business venture to bring in some more money, and threatened to expose Liam’s recent crimes. She might realise she is messing with the wrong person though, if a ruthless Liam decides to kill his aunt in order to save his reputation and make the money he needs.
Liam told Janine he and Cindy Williams (Mimi Keene) were in trouble over in Germany because they owed money.
Ever the manipulator, Janine convinced Liam to join her money-making scheme, which involved stealing cars.
After a scare last week though, when Liam drove off with a car which had a terrified Frankie Lewis (Rose Ayling-Ellis) trapped inside, Janine has lost trust in her nephew.
When she made this clear to him on Thursday, he tried to threaten her by claiming he’d tell her daughter Scarlett Butcher (Tabitha Byron) about what she’s been up to.
“He’s not going to get the chance,” Janine fiercely told Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick).
She later told Liam: “I’m going to do you a favour. I’m cutting you out of the business.”
“You can’t,” the mechanic begged. “They’ll hurt Cindy, and she’ll leave me.”
A merciless Janine replied: “Make me choose between you and me and I will choose me, every time.
“And Tiffany thinks that you’re this hero big brother, are you ready for her to find out what you’re really like?”
She added: “If you’re going to threaten me, then make sure I haven’t got something bigger on you first.
“Like knowing you stole a car with somebody in the boot.”
“You’ll land yourself in it, too,” Liam argued, but Janine had thought everything through.
“No, because I’ve made sure there is nothing linking me to that car but you, on the other hand, well – let’s just hope that you didn’t leave any DNA in it.
“Shout your mouth off to Scarlett, and I will take great pleasure in telling the police what a good little driver you are.”
Janine isn’t one to make empty threats, and Liam probably knows that she means business.
However, viewers – and Janine – don’t know what Liam has been up to since he left Walford.
Upon his return, it was clear he had become a far more dangerous character than he’d been when he left years ago.
Like Janine, he has made it clear he stops at nothing to get what he needs – could he go as far as murder?
It’s possible he might go to extreme lengths to silence Janine.
He also knows his aunt has a lot of enemies, so people wouldn’t be likely to suspect him if something happened to her.
Furthermore, Tiffany is set to leave the Square around Christmas time – could she find out her brother is a murderer and be left unable to be around him?
Later in the episode, Janine told Liam she’d cut him back into the plan if he utilised Tiffany’s business.
“No, no, no – Tiff’s only just started out,” he protested. “I can’t do that to her.”
“Aw, that’s nice, supporting your sister,” his aunt replied, before adding: “But what about stepping up for Cindy, or haven’t you got it in you?”
With Liam not wanting to use his sister, he might decide to get rid of Janine so he can take the money she has made and keep himself in the clear.
Could Janine have finally met her match in her own nephew?
The EastEnders villain has been on and off the soap since 1989, but it seems the character might meet her end.
EastEnders continues on Friday at 8pm on BBC One.
