Danniella Westbrook 'engaged after boyfriend proposed in prison'

Former EastEnders star Danniella Westbrook is reportedly engaged to her boyfriend, who is in prison.

The actress, who played the first iteration of Sam Mitchell on the BBC One soap, said that her boyfriend, named David, popped the question in prison during a visit, according to Daily Star.

The 48-year-old said that, although she has got a ‘big ring’, David didn’t think it was ‘big enough’.

‘I’ve got a big ring that was made for me, and I wore it into the jail and David said “it was lovely but it’s not big enough” so there is a bigger one coming,’ the soap star told the publication.

‘He has asked me to marry him but I told him to wait until he gets home.

‘He asks me all the time, he even asked me at the jail. He didn’t get down on one knee or anything but he’s like ‘we are getting married you know.’

Danniella confirmed that her boyfriend was in prison last month, as she denied reports that she was dating businessman Terry Andrews.

She wrote on social media: ‘This is not my boyfriend. It was a working lunch. My boyfriend is in JAIL!!!’.

‘Never heard of this towie person in my life? And I was on a working lunch and went later that day to look at samples of fabrics and furniture for a possible promo venture which I’ve declined.’

Danniella, 48, originated the role of Sam back in 1990 when she first joined EastEnders at the age of 16, and she would go on to appear regularly in the show until 2000.

EastEnders then recast Sam in 2002, with Kim Medcalf taking over the role.

Kim’s iteration of the character would go on to feature in a number of huge storylines, particularly the murder of Den Watts, which saw her join forces with Chrissie Watts and Zoe Slater.

Sam was once again written out of EastEnders in 2005. Four years later, she returned to the Square, this time with Danniella reprising her role.

The character appeared until January 2010, before making a short comeback in September of the same year.

Danniella’s Sam would make one final appearance in 2016, as the mainstay returned to Walford for mum Peggy’s (Barbara Windsor) funeral.

Sam will make her long-awaited return to Albert Square next week, but with Kim Medcalf reprising the role.
