Dancing On Ice 2021: ITV viewers in uproar over ‘seriously dodgy’ Joe-Warren comment

Dancing On Ice: Joe-Warren Plant takes a tumble on the ice

Dancing On Ice viewers rushed to Twitter to complain after commentator Sam joked Joe-Warren, who is best known for his role as Jacob Gallagher in Emmerdale, is good with “female authority figures”. Fans of the ITV soap know his character was part of a grooming storyline involving teacher Maya Stepney (played by Louisa Clein) so rushed to slam the “seriously dodgy” joke.

Joe-Warren, 18, took to the ice with his professional skating partner Vanessa Bauer to perform to Sucker by the Jonas Brothers.

As a recap of their performance was shown, commentator Sam remarked: “If the skater is anything like the character he plays, he’ll be good with female authority figures.”

In Emmerdale last year, viewers saw Joe-Warren’s character Jacob form an inappropriate relationship with his teacher Maya.

Jacob was unaware he had been groomed and it took a long time for the schoolboy to recover from his ordeal.

Taking to Twitter to comment on Sam’s “inappropriate” comment, one viewer posted: “Seriously dodgy comments about the Emmerdale child teacher abuse storyline?’

“He likes female authority figures. More home schooling’ Did I just hear that? #dancingonice.”

Another added: “Can’t believe that the commentator on #DancingOnIce said that “if the skater is anything like the character he plays, he’ll be good with authority figures” when the character was groomed and abused by a teacher.

“A child being abused does not make them good with authority figures!”

A third shared: “If he’s anything like the character he plays on Emmerdale then he’s good with female authority figures”

“Wow. Abuse/grooming jokes?! Bad show #DancingOnIce.”

Someone else tweeted: “If he’s anything like his character on Emmerdale he’s good with female authority figures” YO WTF #DancingOnIce VOICE OVER MAN???”

Meanwhile, Joe-Warren was the first celebrity to take a tumble on the ice when he tripped over his skates.

After stepping on the ice, he told hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield: “I couldn’t tell you.

“I thought I was doing everything perfectly and I ended up in the floor.”

Fortunately his fall didn’t affect his scoring too much as judge Christopher Dean commented: “You know what? He was smiling when he fell down, and he’s still smiling now.

“That’s what I loved about that performance.”

Joe-Warren is the youngest contestant to take part on the series and has taken time off from Emmerdale to concentrate on the show.

The actor is hoping to follow in the footsteps of co-star Matthew Wolfenden, who won the seventh series.

Dancing On Ice airs Sunday on ITV at 6pm.
