Coronation Street and Emmerdale are hiring – and you could be paid by the soaps

Coronation Street and Emmerdale are both hiring – and you could be paid by the soaps.

ITV have joined a new scheme to improve representation from disadvantaged backgrounds and increase diversity behind-the-scenes.

They have signed up for social mobility initiative First Break by ScreenSkills in a bid to demystify the TV industry.

It will target individuals aged over 18, who may have studied BTECs or NVQs in further education, be career-changers, low-waged or unemployed.

Successful candidates will be heading to the Dales or Weatherfield as Emmerdale and Corrie are offering paid placements.

A group of 100 hopefuls will be invited to a taster session and learn the basics of working in TV.

Then 40 participants will be asked back to a two-day boot camp, where they will get a studio tour and hands-on workshop.

A trip to The Woolpack and The Rovers might be on offer.

This is not just limited to being on camera, as they will learn skills such as handling kit and make-up.

Finally, 10 candidates will be chosen for five days of paid full-time work shadowing on both the soaps.

The days will be spread across technical, creative/practical, organisational and ideas-related departments.

They will be given a mentor and travel expenses will be paid.

Trish Brady, Head of HR, ITV Studios UK, said: "ITV has made a public commitment to improve society representation on screen, as well as increase diversity and inclusivity behind the scenes.

"Partnering with ScreenSkills on this important initiative is key to helping us get closer to ensuring our workforce represents our audience, it's a big goal but one we hope 'First Break' will help us get even closer to fulfilling."

Kaye Elliott, of ScreenSkills, added: "We believe it will be a practical way of making TV more accessible to those without contacts, opening the industry up to people whose life experiences are not currently widely reflected in the television workforce."
