Spoiler alert – the brand new crime series from Netflix featured several insane reveals, not least of which was the unforeseen death of its protagonist Nick Brewer (played by Adrian Grenier). Despite several popular theories making the rounds on Twitter, most of the audience was completely dumbstruck when his murderer was finally revealed in the season finale.

Adrian Grenier has broken his silence on the unexpected twists and turns that befell his character Nick Brewer in the brand new Netflix Original, Clickbait.

The new miniseries has received some divisive reactions from viewers after all eight episodes dropped last Wednesday.

In a recent interview with TV Line, Grenier defended the drastic turn the series took in its finale.

“It’s a testament to the show’s great writing that it felt like literally everyone could have been involved,” he said.

Once it was revealed Nick wouldn’t make it out of the series alive, many fans hit pause at several points throughout the miniseries to wildly speculate the identity of his killer.

Nick’s horrific ordeal kicks off when the father of two is kidnapped and held at ransom.

His tormentors post a video accusing Nick of abusing women, and warn he’ll be killed if it reaches 5 million views.

Naturally, the clip goes viral, and Pia (Zoe Kazan), and wife, Sophie (Betty Gabriel) work together to try and prove his innocence.

However, the biggest twist of the series wasn’t revealed until the closing minutes of Clickbait’s final episode.

Not only had Nick’s isolated co-worker Dawn (Becca Lish) been using his likeness to catfish women online, it was her husband Ed (Wally Dunn) who finished him off when he went to confront Dawn about her toxic behaviour.

The last minute reveal caught viewers off guard, and even provoked some angry reactions on social media.

As the dust settles, Adrian Grenier leapt to the twist ending’s defence and maintained it serves as a stark reminder of the twisted potential of online anonymity.

He told TV Line: “The villains don’t always have a curly mustache and a top hat.

“Sometimes the villains are your neighbors, the people who look the most innocent.”

Despite its mixed reactions, Clickbait has already joined the likes of Black Mirror as a sinister commentary on the darker effects of social media.

Indeed, Grenier hopes the audience will come away from the series with a more critical view of their various online presences.

He claimed the story has a deep message about ‘how we participate in social media’ and the online content we consume on a regular basis.

“Get your media diet in check and recognize that what you put out and what you consume actually affects the world,” he urged readers.

Hopefully Netflix subscribers can look past the show’s bonkers twists and turns and heed Grenier’s warning next time they check in online.
