Casualty spoilers: Iain brutally attacked as he saves Elvira and her friends

Amanda Mealing certainly knows how to direct a violent fight scene, as we saw in tonight’s Casualty. Having finally tracked down Keidi’s sister Elvira (Anisa Zaraj) – who’d also been looking for him – Iain (Michael Stevenson) was devastated to discover that the desperate woman had resorted to drinking anti-freeze to get herself admitted to hospital and away from the evil gang who were exploiting her.

With Ffion (Stirling Gallacher) once again telling Iain that there wasn’t much the police could do, he went off on his own to confront the gang leader. He found the gang ready to move the trafficked people out of the car wash where they’d been working and tackled the gang leader (Shezai Fejzo). A brutal fight ensued, with Iain escaping only after Elvira’s friend Mariam (Jessie Bedrossian) distracted the gang leader for a second. Iain was able to deliver the final blow with an iron pipe, just as the police and Teddy (Milo Clarke) arrived to the rescue.

Iain’s promise to Keidi that he would find Elvira ended with him sadly having to tell her that her brother had died, but at least he knows that she and the rest of her friends are safe and his actions have helped the police to start rounding up those responsible.

The violence also spread within the hospital, as another gang member (Andi Jashy) was despatched to deal with Elvira, and Rash (Neet Mohan) and Paige (Shalisha James-Davis) walked in as he held a knife over her. As the man lunged at them, Rash threw himself in front of Paige and was slashed across the neck for his troubles.

Luckily the wound wasn’t serious, but Rash’s brave action certainly impressed Paige. Earlier in the episode he’d asked her out and this was met by an awkward silence. It wasn’t that Paige doesn’t like Rash, it was just that she’s feeling lost, scared and lonely following the death of her mother to breast cancer and the worry that she has to be tested for the gene. Rash is always a good listener and he was extremely understanding and kind.

To these qualities you can also add in brave. ‘You jumped in front of a knife for me,’ she said later. His reply was quite factual, but it came out sounding like the most romantic thing on earth: ‘You’re my F1.’

Who could resist? At the end of the shift Paige offered him a lift home – and a kiss.
