Call The Midwife fans were horrified on Sunday night when the latest episode of the BBC period drama featured a shocking train crash. Doctor Turner (played by Stephen McGann), Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) and Nancy Corrigan (Megan Cusack) were seen lying the wreckage of the accident as the episode ended on a cliffhanger. Many viewers are concerned about the fate of the beloved characters and the impact it could have on the rest of the team at Nonnatus House. If Doctor Turner is killed in the crash, could his wife Shelagh Turner (Laura Main) leave Poplar and return to her roots in Scotland?

Sunday night’s episode of Call The Midwife left viewers heartbroken when Doctor Turner, Sister Julienne and Nancy’s lives were put on the line.

On the way back from an obstetrics conference, the trio boarded a train bound for Liverpool Street station.

The train was being driven by Lionel Corbett (Marc Elliot), who had been suffering from an unknown medical complaint.

However, he wrote off his symptoms as tiredness as he and his wife awaited the birth of their second child.

As the train carried on along the tracks, viewers were shocked to see Lionel having some sort of episode, losing control of the train and causing it to pick up speed.

The carriages eventually derailed and crashed into another train running alongside.

Watching the drama unfold, viewers grew concerned for Sister Julienne and Doctor Turner, who were trapped inside the train, seemingly unconscious.

As the episode ended on a cliffhanger, many fans took to Twitter to question the fate of their beloved characters.

Many viewers seemed concerned about how Shelagh would cope if her husband was killed in the accident.

“Praying for Doctor Turner and Sister Julienne. Would hate to see Shelagh lose her husband. #CallTheMidwife,” @Sophia60144298 wrote.

“@CallTheMidwife1 cannot take Patrick away from Shelagh #CallTheMidwife,” @DebbieBlackma14 insisted.

“I’ve spent the last 10 years worshipping Turnadette, it cannot end like this and I can’t wait a WEEK to find out… #CallTheMidwife,” @CaitAFulton posted.

“Please let them be okay! I can’t imagine Shelagh, Tim and the kids without Dr Turner, and Nonnatus house without Sister Julienne! #CallTheMidwife,” @ReshmaSofia said.

@AliceMagee commented: “Was having stress dreams about last night’s #CallTheMidwife all night. I don’t think I can cope if Sister Julienne or Dr Turner don’t make it out of this.”

“Anyone else wake up this morning worrying about Dr Turner and Sister Julianne? It’s going to be a long week #CallTheMidwife,” @JoJojo720 added.

If Doctor Turner doesn’t survive the crash Shelagh will be heartbroken and may make some drastic life choices while grieving.

In a bid to do what is best for her family, could Shelagh decide to move away from Poplar with her children.

She may struggle to remain in the area if there are too many reminders of her husband.

Could Shelagh leave Poplar and Nonnatus House and head back to Scotland?

Call The Midwife airs Sundays at 8pm on BBC One.
