Following the story laid out by the series of novels by the same name, the second season of Bridgerton was always going to follow another sibling in their quest to find love.
After season one was all about Daphne (played by Phoebe Dynevor), season two was going to be Anthony’s (Jonathan Bailey).
Fans had already speculated that Daphne and Simon would make less of an appearance in the coming season, but since Simon was a close friend of Anthony, the hope remained until today.
That didn’t stop some people targetting their disappointment towards the new protagonist: “You’re telling me that Regé-Jean Page is not coming back?!?!! I don’t give a d**n about Anthony or his mutton chops.”
The statement posted to the official Bridgerton Twitter account read: “While all eyes turn to Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess, we bid adieu to Regé-Jean Page, who triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings.”
“We’ll miss Simon’s presence onscreen, but he will always be a part of the Bridgerton family.
“Daphne will remain a devoted wife and sister, helping her brother navigate the upcoming social season and what it has to offer – more intrigue and romance than my readers may be able to bear.”
The actor didn’t give any specific explanation as to his departure, except for the fact that he had originally signed up for only one season.
Bridgerton is available to stream on Netflix.
