Kate and Koji made a return to screens earlier this year with Brenda Blethyn leading the comedy as cafe owner Kate. The ITV series, which began in 2020, surrounded the life of Kate and asylum-seeker Koji (played by Okorie Chukwu), a doctor who sets up a surgery in the cafe to help her bring in customers. Despite making a comeback with its second series, ITV has reportedly said the show won’t return with a third season.
Speaking about the show, an ITV spokesperson told the Daily Mirror: “We’ve loved having Kate & Koji on the channel.”
“We would like to thank all of the cast and crew for their hard work.”
Koji was originally played by actor Jimmy Akingbola, who left the show following the first series after landing a role in the reboot of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
However, he was quickly replaced by Okorie for the second instalment.
Fans were left gutted by the news, and many took to social media to share their thoughts.
Jehan wrote: “Another great show bites the dust I loved #KateAndKoji.”
AJ tweeted: “Not Kate and Koji! It was the most perplexing of television shows in that you wonder what they did to get it commissioned, not once but twice.”
While Gavin Owen added: “Sad to hear Kate and koji has been axed thought it was a great sitcom.”
“#KateAndKoji has been axed by @ITV I am not happy,” Harry said.
“I love that show! Don’t make me start a petition! Haha. Seriously though… please rethink! @BrendaBlethyn @blakeharrison23 @okorie_chukwu.” (sic)
Rachel Sanders said: “@BrendaBlethyn I’m absolutely gutted to hear Kate and Koji won’t return. I loved seeing you live Brenda with the cast and crew at Elstree .what a shame xx.” (sic)
Leading lady Brenda and the rest of the cast are yet to publicly address the news on social media.
Earlier this year, Brenda and Okorie appeared on This Morning to chat about the comedy series.
Okorie told Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield what it was like taking over the role from Jimmy.
“When I read the scripts, I really felt a connection with Koji,” he explained.
“And when the job was offered, I did think it was not a usual way to onboard the show, but it was a hit show and an amazing comedy.
“Everyone was so welcoming and so warm and the way that the team got me involved and supported me throughout the whole process, it was amazing.”
Brenda chipped in: “It was a very easy transition because we’d missed a year because of the lockdown. It’s been a two-year gap.”
Brenda is currently filming for her other ITV role in Vera where she plays DCI Stanhope.
