The life of a social media influencer seems like a piece of cake. You get paid for filming yourself talking about your favorite things, then you upload the video and end up rich and famous. Easy, right? Unfortunately, there are downfalls to putting your life online for the world to see. You’re inviting a whole lot of strangers into your life, and even if you aren’t sharing super-sensitive personal information, there’s a chance it’ll get out there anyway. One popular influencer from 90 Day Fiance has some words of wisdom to share with her fans and anyone hoping to pursue a career on social media.
Who is Stephanie Matto?
Stephanie Matto is a YouTuber who also appeared on the TLC reality series, 90 Day Fiance. Her time on the show was a bit controversial, to say the least. The 29-year-old had been in a relationship with 24-year-old Erika Owens for a year before they appeared on the series. Owens, a photographer from Australia, was a follower of Matto and the two met on Instagram.
Matto and Owens had tons of issues during their run on 90 Day Fiance. Jealousy, trust issues, and constant arguments all ensured that the relationship fizzled out pretty quickly. Matto also had trouble sharing the truth about her sexuality with her family, which upset Owens. Rumors circulated that Matto only pretended to be bisexual to increase her social media following.
How does she make a living after her time on ’90 Day Fiance’?
Matto was already active on social media before appearing on 90 Day Fiance, but her time on the show definitely increased her popularity. Her fame reached new heights after fans experienced her tumultuous relationship with Owens, and she amassed an incredible following. She now has more than 370,000 subscribers and over 700 uploaded videos on YouTube.
Matto’s YouTube channel touches on a variety of lifestyle topics, including fashion, travel, and make-up. Videos range from clothing hauls where Matto tries on a bunch of outfits to trips to the doctor–she once shared a video of her chin liposuction. Matto’s Instagram, where she refers to herself as “the Martha Stewart of OnlyFans” has 259,000 followers.
The influencer makes most of her income from OnlyFans, where she posts provocative images for her followers. According to SoapDirt, Matto made over $30,000 in just two weeks this past August. $10K of that income came from subscriptions, while about $23K came from messages. The wealthy young mogul even posted a photo on Instagram posing with her new Porsche.
In addition to her social media outlets, Matto also wrote a book titled Mean Boys & Memories. The book is a compilation of short stories detailing miscellaneous adventures throughout her life.
What is her advice about becoming an influencer?
Making big bucks for hanging around on social media all day certainly seems ideal. After all, it’s something many of us do with a lot of our time anyway. Getting paid for it would be great. Apparently, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Putting yourself in the spotlight attracts a lot of fans, and not all of them are stable.
Matto had a traumatizing experience with a stalker that left her living in fear for more than a year, she confessed on the podcast Strictly Stalking (available on Stitcher). The obsessive fan contacted her through email and also left several messages on her voicemail. He knew her address and claimed to be a neighbor who watched her through the windows.
The star encourages aspiring influencers to remain true to themselves and share their personality and interests. However, she stresses the importance of limits and maintaining your privacy. Matto’s advice is to protect information about your location and to be very careful about pursuing a career online.
During a Strictly Stalking podcast episode, Matto told her fans “There’s risk and there’s reward just like anything in life. The reward is you get to work for yourself, you work from home, and there’s endless earning potential. The risk is that your s**** out there and people are nasty and rude and sometimes people cross the line.”
