In a world filled with social pressures and criticism, Lizzo is a breath a fresh air. She does not give into society’s definition of “perfect.” Instead, she takes that word and redefines it in a way that allows the world to see just how beautiful someone’s differences can be. She is comfortable enough in her own skin to show the world her true colors and her true talents, without worrying about what others think.
Lizzo is transforming the way hip-hop is perceived and paving the way for a new generation of artist to showcase their talents without being afraid of showing their unique personality. If you are not too familiar with this world-class hip-hop star, don’t worry because we have all of the information that you need about Lizzo.
Who is Lizzo?
Melissa “Lizzo” Jefferson was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 27, 1988. She and her family moved to Houston, Texas when she was around 10 years old. She grew up in a household where religion was put before anything else. Her family was very active in the Pentecostal church and the only kind of music that was played in her house when she was younger was gospel music. In fact, before she moved to Houston, she had heard that Tupac had passed away, but she had no clue who Tupac was.
However, while growing up in Houston, hip-hop music was all around her. In an interview with NPR, she had talked about how the musical influences around her helped to prepare her for performing in the future.
“There was a lot of freestyling on the [school] bus, there was a lot of freestyling in the cafeteria, and there was a lot of freestyling on the radio,” Lizzo said. “And I would call into this morning show and try to get through so I could do the freestyle.”
We don’t know for sure, but we bet that the radio station is probably excited about being the first ones to ever get to play an original song by Lizzo on the radio.
What makes Lizzo’s music unique?
When Lizzo was in the eighth grade, she learned to play the flute. She was a prominent flute player throughout her entire high school years and even joined the marching band again when she attended the University of Texas.
When she got older and realized that she wanted to be a full-time musician, she decided that she was not going to leave her flute behind. She has figured out a way to combine all of her loves and interests into her music. Some of her songs have a bit of a gospel and R&B vibe to them, and others allow her to show off her spunky and sassy side.
Her flute makes an appearance in many of her songs, which adds a whole new level of entertainment when you get to see her switch from singing and dancing to playing the flute.
