King Crimson star Gordon Haskell dies aged 74

King Crimson star Gordon Haskell has died at the age of 74, it has been confirmed.

The sad news was announced on Haskell’s official Facebook page but a cause of death was not revealed.

A message on the account said: ‘It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Gordon, a great musician and a wonderful person who will be sadly missed by so many.’

King Crimson also addressed the announcement and said: ‘His time in KC wasn’t a particularly happy part of his long career but his work on In The Wake Of Poseidon and in particular, Lizard is much admired in the Crimson community.’

Haskell, former singer and bassist in King Crimson, became a member of the band on their second and third albums after they formed in 1978.

The musician’s career also included stints with the bad League of Gentlemen, pop band Fleur de Lys. While a part of King Crimson, Haskell notably sang Cadence and Cascade on In The Wake of Poseidon (1970) and played bass on Lizard that same year.

During his time with Fleur de Lys, he lived with legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix for some time.

Haskell quit King Crimson in 1970 and author Sid Smith detailed his departure in his book In The Court of King Crimson.

According to Smith, tension built over royalties and status within the band.

‘Gordon was out of place in Crimson, and has suffered distress for nearly 30 years as a result of his (relatively minor) involvement,’ Smith wrote.

Haskell continued to make music following his departure from King Crimson and in 2001, became an unlikely contender for the Christmas number one spot with his single How Wonderful You Are.

It was off the back of a major BBC Radio 2 campaign and was backed by presenter Johnnie Walker.

The track instead reached number two on the UK charts and just missed out on the top spot after being beaten by Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman’s Somethin’ Stupid.

Still, How Wonderful You Are is believed to be the most requested song in Radio 2 history.
