Summer Walker is one of the top new artists of the year, bursting onto the R&B scene with her first album, Over It. But all of this success did not come overnight.
In fact, Canadian rapper Drake was essential in Walker’s success, giving his seal of approval as he has done with many up-and-coming artists.
Drake constantly supports new artists
In his music career, Drake has been known for always throwing his support toward new artists. Most notably, he’s remixed songs from performers like ILoveMakonnen and Fetty Wap as they began to see increased success. He’s also collaborated with artists like BlocBoy JB, just as they are about to make it big.
While Drake has attracted some criticism for seemingly hopping on artists and trends when they are hot, it is hard to deny the impact of a Drake co-sign.
After Walker’s single, “Girls Need Love,” began to gain traction on social media, Drake immediately got on a remix to the track. While the original track did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100, the remix reached No. 37. The song was eventually certified Platinum in the United States.
Summer Walker releases her debut album
After the success of “Girls Need Love,” Walker released her debut album, Over It. The album features collaborations with the likes of Usher, Bryson Tiller, 6lack, Jhené Aiko, and PartyNextDoor.
While Walker gained a cult following from the initial release of “Girls Need Love,” Drake’s remix of the song exposed her to new audiences.
The album is one of the biggest releases of the year and has set multiple records. It is the most-streamed R&B album by a woman artist in history, besting a record set by Beyoncé with Lemonade in 2016. The most streamed R&B album, regardless of gender, is The Weeknd’s 2016 album, Starboy.
Drake is inspired by Summer Walker
Walker posted a message on Instagram from the Canadian rapper, in which he congratulated her on the album. He also revealed that “Fun Girl” is his favorite song from the project.
Drake told Walker that she has inspired him to pen new music, saying, “Nah wtf. U snapped. Just made me write two songs it’s 7:30 am here. Album crazy.”
Drake’s comment spurred Walker to ask her fans about their favorite song from the album. Could another Drake collaboration or remix be on the way?
If you haven’t listened to Over It yet, the album is streaming on all major platforms.
