Freddie Mercury and Princess Diana; The photo that ‘proves’ their night together

It has become an urban legend. A magical crazy night between our Queen of Hearts and the queen of Queen at a gay bar in South London. But did two of the most famous people on the planet really get away with something so audacious and shocking – especially in public, in front of hundreds of people? And nobody noticed? A photo hit the internet showing the pair cosied up together, but what does it prove?

Apparently, Freddie and Diana struck up a friendship and bonded over their love of the sitcom The Golden Girls, along with celebrities like Rupert Everett and Kenny Everett.

Kenny’s friend Cleo Rocos described one particular afternoon: “The group spent the afternoon drinking champagne in front of reruns of The Golden Girls with the sound turned down and improvising show dialogue with a much naughtier storyline.”

But it’s what happened afterward that has become one of London’s biggest urban myths. Did Princess Di really do that in public?

Apparently, Diana wanted to tag along with the friends for the rest of their evening, when they had planned to go to a famous South London gay bar, the appropriately named Royal Vauxhall Tavern.

According to Rocos, they disguised the princess as a man in a baseball cap, sunglasses and army bomber jacket.

Rocos said: “When we walked in … we felt she was obviously Princess Diana and would be discovered at any minute. But people just seemed to blank her. She sort of disappeared. But she loved it.”

It’s possible the crowd was distracted by stars like Freddie and Kenny suddenly appearing…

Express Online spoke to Freddie’s PA and close friend Peter Freestone: “No, not at all. Maybe Diana went with Kenny but Freddie wasn’t there. He never met her.”

He went on to tell us that even at Live Aid Freddie declined a chance to hang out with the princess: “You see Brian May and Roger Taylor in the royal box. Freddie didn’t go. He was more interested in being with friends backstage, talking with Elton John, hanging out with his people. His friends were always the most important to him.”

So what about the picture? One of the main Freddie fan sites reveals the truth.

Freddie Mercury Fan Club published the picture of Freddie and Diana together.

It said: “I’ve been seeing a lot of photoshopped photos of Freddie with other people where the head has been swopped for someone else.

“In the 1st photo you can see the real photo of Freddie with Barbara Valentin and then the photoshopped one with Princess Diana which is based on the myth of them meeting and all which most likely never even happened.”

Barbara Valentin became close friends with Freddie when he was living and recording in Germany and they remained close until his death in 1991.
