Capital FM flooded with Ofcom complaints over DJ’s cruel Turkey earthquake joke

Capital FM has been flooded with complaints Ofcom after DJ Ant Payne made a cruel joke about the earthquake in Turkey.

The drivetime host sparked outrage from viewers when he joked about booking "cheap flights" to Turkey following the 7.8 magnitude disaster and subsequent aftershocks.

The earthquakes in Turkey and Syria have killed over 40,000 people to date with search and rescue missions still underway and thousands more left without homes, food, or water.

Ofcom's weekly reports has revealed that Ant triggered 567 complaints from listeners who were disgusted at his comments.

Ant told his audience that now was the "best time" to look for cheap deals to head oversees and get their "teeth done," and they could then "get on Love Island."

He said: "I think now actually is the best time to start looking at some cheap flights to Turkey over the next few years.

"You can get your teeth done while you're over there. You can come back looking 19 years, you'll be on Love Island next year if you do it!"

The radio host has now apologised for his comments with a statement on Twitter after bosses at London's Global head office where the show is broadcast from reportedly gave him a dressing down.

He wrote: "Hi guys, I want to address the comment I made last night on the show. It was insensitive and ill timed. I would never wish to offend anyone from my shows. My sincere and wholehearted apologies."

Infuriated listeners took to Twitter to air their disgust at his comments.

One posted: "Over 35,000 are dead. A country in mourning. Thousands of people trying to raise money for those affected and this is what @CapitalOfficial says about it. I am in shock and disgusted…"

A second said: "During this time of devastation the Turkish community in the UK is in a state of deep mourning To hear a prominent DJ Ant Payne of @CapitalFM make light of the current hardships our people are facing is completely unacceptable and inhumane! #PayneOffAir."

A third added: "@CapitalOfficial Ant Payne deserves to be sacked for his insensitive comments!! Absolutely disgusted this disrespect for thousands of people was allowed to happen! #antpayne #capitalfm".
