Boomtown Festival takes place in Winchester every year, and has done since 2009. In 2020, the festival was cancelled along with many others due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now, the festival organisers have once again been forced to cancel as the shadow of COVID-19 looms large.

Why is Boomtown 2021 cancelled?

According to the festival organisers, the music five day-er has been cancelled due to a lack of government insurance around events due to COVID-19.

In a statement, the organisers said: “After almost half a year of collective campaigning to the government, sadly COVID specific cancellation insurance for events still does not exist at this point in time.

“This means anyone putting on an event this year, will be doing so without the safety net of insurance to cover them should COVID prevent them from going ahead in any capacity.

“For an independent event as large and complex as Boomtown, this is a huge gamble of up to an eight figure sum and the financial risk is simply too high.”

The festival organisers also put out a tweet to their fans, who will be likely devastated to have their summer plans ruined once more by the pandemic.

The series of tweets read: “We are absolutely devastated to announce that unfortunately, we will no longer be holding Boomtown Chapter One: The Gathering this year and it will now take place from 10 – 14th August 2022

“We have been doing everything within our power to try to find a solution to the mind-boggling conundrum of putting on a safe and well-run event to the sheer scale, complexity and intricate nature of Boomtown this summer.

“However, the time has simply run out for us to be able to proceed in a way that would live up to our high safety and production standards for the large scale event we had planned.

“Critically, with less than four months to go and after almost half a year of collective campaigning to the government, COVID specific cancellation insurance for events simply does not exist at this point in time and therefore there’s no safety net to support.

“This means we would be gambling up to an 8-figure loss should the event not be able to go ahead due to COVID restrictions, which would put the future of the festival at serious risk.”

The festival has seen big names perform such as Lauryn Hill, The Streets and Groove Armada take to the various stages at the Matterley Estate in the South Downs.

The 2022 festival will now take place on August 10-14, 2022, but the line-up will be kept under wraps until nearer the time.

How can I get a ticket refund for Boomtown?

The festival organisers have said tickets will automatically roll over to the next year, however there is a process for refunds and resale for the 2022 event.

In a continuation of their Twitter statement, the organisers said: “Tickets will automatically roll over to the 2022 event and refunds will be available to those who wish.

“We’re so grateful to everyone who has kept their ticket with us, you really did save the festival, and will continue to do so if you are able to roll them over again.

“We’re truly devastated to not be able to come together to celebrate this summer, and we know how hard this will be for the thousands of you who have supported us and kept the faith that we could collectively reunite in the beautiful fields this year.

“The resale will go ahead on June 1, so if you weren’t able to get a ticket, then this might be the golden opportunity to get your hands on a ticket to come and join us when we get to reset to Chapter One and are all finally able to dance together once more in August ’22!”

As mentioned, tickets are refundable for those who want to, and all information on how to do this is on the festival website.

Boomtown Fair will now take place on August 10-14, 2022, with resale tickets availabls from June 1
