American Beauty turns 20: Where is leading lady Mena Suvari now?

The dark comedy, which starred Kevin Spacey, was highly-praised by critics, and was handed a plethora of awards – landing Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography at The Academy Awards in 2000.

Kevin Spacey took the lead role in the film, which saw him scoop an Oscar for his impressive performance.

Spacey played Lester Burnham, a frustrated middle-aged magazine executive, who loathes his job and is unhappy in his marriage to wife Carolyn (Annette Bening).

The pair share 16-year-old daughter Jane (Thora Birch), who hates her parents and who suffers from a low self-esteem.

Lester becomes infatuated with Jane's vain cheerleader friend Angela Hayes (Mena Suvari) and starts having sexual fantasies about her.

He also begins working out and buys a fancy car to try and impress the high schooler.

One of the most famous scenes in the critically-acclaimed film, sees Angela lying completely naked covered in nothing but rose petals, as Lester longs for her.

The racy scene catapulted Mena, who was just 20 at the time, to international superstardom.

But where is the blonde bombshell now?

Since American Beauty's success, for which she received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress, Mena, now 40 years old, has bagged herself a number of other big film roles.

Most famously, she starred in the American Pie film franchise (1999-2001, 2012).

Mena played Heather in the film – a goody two-shoes choir singer who embarks on an on/off-relationship with jock, Oz (Chris Klein).

She has also starred in a number of independent films; including Spun (2002), where she starred alongside the late Brittany Murphy and played an addict and the girlfriend of a drug dealer.

More recently, Mena has made one-episode appearances in series such as Inside Amy Schumer, Justice League Action and American Ninja Warrior.

She also bagged a role in sitcom American Woman, which saw Mena as one of three women who discover their independence amid the second-rise wave of feminism in the 1970s – however, it was cancelled after just one series in 2018.

Mena, who married third husband Michael Hope last year, has also bagged numerous modelling jobs for brands such as Lancôme and luxury accessories company, Coach, New York.

The star, who was born in Rhode Island, America, is also often wowing her 185,000-strong Instagram fanbase with a plethora of snaps – showing off her beach babe looks, as well as being decked out in full-on Hollywood glamour.
