Their marriage didn’t even last two years. They tied the knot in May 1994 after a whirlwind courtship and separated in December 1995. Everybody had assumed it was a publicity stunt and few believed the two impossibly famous people were suited to each other or genuinely loved each other – let alone consummated their relationship. Yet, Lisa Marie dropped huge bombshells in a major interview when she revealed the pair had frequently tried to get back together on and off for four more years – during which time Michael had also married Debbie Rowe and become father to Prince Michael and Paris. It was only in the very end, when Michael died on June 25, 2009, that Lisa Marie made a shattering discovery.
Lisa Marie insisted their love was profound and the greatest Michael had ever experienced in a relationship.
She said: “I know he’d had a few dates in his life but there was nothing profound for him in that area. He fell in love with me and I fell in love with him and it was very real.”
So much so that they found it impossible to leave the relationship for years after the actual divorce in 1997.
Lisa Marie confessed: “We were going to get back together. We spent four more years after we divorced.. getting back together and breaking up, talking about getting back together and breaking up…
“He and I were still… I was flying all over the world still with him for years to follow.”
If they loved each other so much, why didn’t they make it work?
Lisa Marie they argued over her ongoing friendship with her previous husband, Danny Keough, the father of her first two children Riley and Ben.
They argued over Michael’s entourage, who Lisa Marie felt were draining Michael and enabling his worst behavior.
They argued over his determination to start a family immediately.

Lisa Marie told Oprah Winfrey: “And at some point I had to push it away because I wasn’t moving forward.
“I left him to stomp my foot in the ground, I was trying to take a stand and say, ‘Come with me, don’t do this (carry on down the same path).’ And it was a stupid move because he didn’t…
“But I have to say in retrospect that he tried so hard and went through so much with me. He’s never done that with any other female or anyone as much as we went through. We would argue, three day arguments.. I have to say that I admire he really gave it a good shot.
“I had to make the decision to walk because I saw the drugs and doctors were coming in and they scared me and that put me back into what `iI went through with my father (Elvis) and that ended it.”

During their final conversation in 2005, Lisa Marie decided to cut Michael out of her life completely.
She said: “He wanted to tell me that I was right about a lot of people around him. That it had panned out to be exactly what he and I had talked about years ago. He asked if I still loved him and I told him I was indifferent. And he didn’t like that word and he cried…”
But when she heard the news that Michael had died, Lisa Marie had terrible epiphany.
Asked if she finally realised at that moment that he had loved her as much as she loved him, she said: “I think so, sadly. I think… yes. When we were together we were really in love.”
