After releasing a teaser for “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” in May that was long on atmosphere and short on plot specifics, Disney has followed it up with a trailer that lays out the sequel’s story more clearly.
Angelina Jolie reprises her role as the titular fairy who became an unlikely godmother to Aurora (Elle Fanning) in the original 2014 film, a revamped version of “Sleeping Beauty.” Their bond is threatened by Aurora’s impending marriage to Prince Phillip (Harris Dickinson, replacing Brenton Thwaites in the role). “Love doesn’t always end well,” Maleficent warns her goddaughter before declaring, “There is no union — there will be no wedding!”
The visually spectacular clip sets up a violent showdown between Maleficent and Aurora’s would-be mother-in-law, Queen Ingrith, a new character played by Michelle Pfeiffer. Also joining the cast is Chiwetel Ejiofor, glimpsed at the trailer’s end as another winged creature who becomes Maleficent’s ally.
Directed by Joachim Ronning — who was one of the directors of another Disney sequel, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” — “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” hits theaters on Oct. 18.
