Clueless casting director Marcia Ross shares sweet memory of meeting Brittany Murphy
Fans around the world have been celebrating 25 glorious years of Clueless this week, but there is also been an undercurrent of sadness as many mourn the loss of Brittany Murphy.
The actress famously played Tai Frasier in the iconic film and went on to have a successful Hollywood career before she died in 2009 at the age of 32.
And for those who got to meet her, the loss is all the more poignant.
Noted casting director Marica Ross was the person who helped a young Brittany bag her breakout role alongside Alicia Silverstone in the 1995 classic.
And speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk about how she got the cast together, Ross opened up about meeting Brittany.
She explained: ‘Brittany was the sweetest, but the thing about her is that she was also very insecure. She was a wonderful girl and great actress but she was just very insecure. You just wanted to look after her.’
Ross added: ‘She was truly so sweet and very eager to please. I don’t think she realized how incredibly talented she was but I saw it straight away. She had so much more to give.’
And being able to spot young talent was a skill that came in very handy when Ross was putting the Clueless cast together.
While the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Zooey Deschanel and Sarah Michelle Gellar had been eyed up for the lead role of Cher before Ross joined the team, she admitted that Alicia Silverstone instantly bagged the part after her audition.
This meant Alicia had to do multiple chemistry screen tests with several of the men up for the role of Josh.
In fact, Josh was going to be played by another actor because Paul Rudd ended taking a part in Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers while casting was still going on.
But fortunately, he was able to come back into the mix afterwards, and after he read with Alicia there was no going back.
Ross explained: ‘It was the first time Alicia was wearing her plaid outfit and it was just so special. As soon as they read together it was just so obvious.
‘The chemistry was instant, the connection was just there. They were just great together. You couldn’t deny he was the right person to play Josh.’
We’re seriously buggin’ over the fact there might have been a time where anyone other than Alicia and Paul would have played Cher and Josh.
Luckily for us all, that never happened!
