If you somehow haven’t heard about the wild success that the docuseries Tiger King has had on Netflix, then it’s time to pay attention. The true story of Joe Exotic and his life at the Greater Wynnewood Zoo comes with many eccentric characters that played a part in his downfall, and fans are suspecting that Jeff Lowe and Carole Baskin, a.k.a. the two “antagonists” of the series, might have a more complicated—and a possibly romantic—history than just them knowing the former zoo owner. The theory? The twosome might have been married, with Baskin’s first husband, Michael Murdock actually being none other than Lowe.
The theory, which originated in a Tiger King memes Facebook group towards the end of March, claimed that due to a number of seemingly small coincidences—from looks to intertwining plot lines—Lowe and Baskin might have more ties than what the series portrayed of the duo.
“Jeff is Carole’s abusive first husband that she paid off to go take Joe down,” the fan wrote in the group, along with side-by-side photos of a young Baskin with Murdock and Lowe. “She rented a mansion and that car to draw him in. Jeff (and James Garretson) even admit they directed Joe to kill Carole.”
“When Joe didn’t do it,” the fan continued, “they needed him to pay, he didn’t. So Jeff sent his friend and he ‘chickened out’ on purpose.”

Sure, the two men might bear similar facial features, and the theory might seem a little bit far-fetched, even for Tiger King standards. But this person is clearly not the only one who had some logic about this, as other fans on Twitter not only agreed with the sentiments, but they also pointed out that Lowe might have a domestic assault charge against his ex-wife, while Baskin said in the past that her first relationship was an abusive one.
So lemme get this straight.
Jeff Lowe is Carole Baskin’s first husband and she hired him to SET JOE EXOTIC UP?#TigerKing pic.twitter.com/QMAL8u34L4
Holy fuck man. I’ve just seen a conspiracy theory that Jeff Lowe is Carole Baskin’s first husband and I think I’m going fucking nuts, because I’m not doubting it one bit
Is it true? More than likely not. But with this group of characters and more of the story unfolding, you never know what could happen next.
