Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker, the co-hosts of the 54th Annual Country Music Association Awards, paid tribute to late country legend Mac Davis with a cover of his classic “In the Ghetto” on Wednesday night, November 11.
“Well the world turns/ And a hungry little boy with a runny nose/ Plays in the street as the cold wind blows/ In the ghetto,” the pair sings in the striking duet.
The performance ended with a black-and-white photo of Davis, who passed away on September 29 at age 78, being displayed onscreen.
McEntire and Rucker recorded “In the Ghetto” together in October. The cover is available on all streaming services.
“In the Ghetto” was written by Davis and was originally recorded by Elvis Presley in 1969.
“Thank you, dear Lord Jesus, for letting us know the man to whom you gave the most incredible talent. He entertained and spread joy to so many people,” McEntire had said in a statement after Davis passed away.
She added, “What a wonderful legacy he left all of us with his music. Mac was one of a kind. I’m so blessed to have been one of his many friends.”
