The National Television Awards wasn’t all cheers as audience members appeared to boo Piers Morgan when his nomination was announced on stage.
Piers was in the running for the Best Presenter Award for his work with former employer ITV on Good Morning Britain, but hadn’t shown up for the ceremony.
As the nominees for the award were announced, the crowd could be heard booing for a moment before the sound was drowned out by other members of the audience – which included many of Piers' celebrity pals – cheering.
Piers was up against Alison Hammond and Holly Willoughby from This Morning, The Chase’s Bradley Walsh and I’m a Celebrity duo Ant and Dec.
Ant and Dec ended up winning the award for the 20th time in a row – after Piers previously said “it’s cheating” that the pair are nominated for the accolade each year.
Piers told The Mirror: “If they had to do this individually, how would they get on? I think it’s actually cheating to do it as a pair."
The former presenter dived deep into his opinion on the award “automatically” going to the celebrity duo.
He said: “I deserve to win because everyone’s sick and tired of Ant and Dec automatically winning this award, which bears no relation to reality."
“I think it’s time the procession came to a shuddering halt and the Morgan bandwagon was rewarded with glory," he continued.
“Imagine the miserable expressions on the faces of those two. And if they not only don’t win… [but] have to see me trotting up and raising the award, you may have to have a medical team on standby to race in and make sure they’re OK.
“We might need smelling salts for that one."
After Ant and Dec won the award, Piers jumped to Twitter to sarcastically respond to the pair's victory.
He tweeted: “Wow! What a shock! Congrats to Ant & Dec. Thoroughly deserved 20 th consecutive win – the way they held those jungle contestants to account during the pandemic was absolutely brilliant #ntas”.
He followed up with a gif of his famous storm out of the Good Morning Britain set as he captioned: “Just as well I’m not there. #ntas."
