Hollywood actor Matthew Perry, 51, sparked widespread concern amongst Friends fans last week, after he “seemed off” during a promotional video ahead of the series’ reunion. During the short video, the star spoke a handful of times, during which some fans claimed he was slurring his words, but it has since been claimed that he underwent hours of emergency dental work before filming the video, which left him in “pain”.
He had an emergency tooth procedure that day
Matthew sat down with his co-stars David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston ahead of the Friends reunion.
However, his behaviour “seemed off” to many fans, who took to social media to relay their concerns.
While his co-stars appeared to take the lead during the interview, the 17 Again star spoke only a handful of times.
Nevertheless, the star’s slow speech appeared to be slightly slurred, and he even appeared to nod off at one point.
Since then, a source has told The Sun that during the filming, the actor – who plays Chandler Bing in the series – was “in pain” from undergoing hours of emergency dental work.
They said: “Matthew turned up to the reunion [in April] and members of his team said that he had an emergency tooth procedure that day.
“That was said to impact his wellbeing and also how he was feeling.
“He had been in pain from what we understand, which caused the slurred speech,” they added.
Express.co.uk has contacted a representative for Matthew for comment.
Matthew has been open about his struggles with addiction in the past.
Speaking to People magazine, the star admitted that his lifestyle got “out of control and very unhealthy” following a 1997 jet-ski accident which left him addicted to painkiller Vicodin.
Additionally, the actor spoke to BBC Radio 2 five years ago and said he had been “a little out of it” while filming parts of Friends.
He said: “I don’t remember three years of [the show].
“Somewhere between Seasons 3 and 6 … I was a little out of it,” Matthew added.
Taking to Twitter after the release of the promo video, fans of the show shared their worries about the actor.
One wrote: “Just saw People interview and can’t believe how Matthew Perry looks like… seriously it breaks my heart.” (sic)
Another added: “I am disconcerted by the lack of speaking appearances Matthew Perry makes in the Friends reunion trailer & the People interview video.
While a third penned: “I know everyone is thinking about it but few are talking publicly about it.
“It pains me to see Matthew Perry like this, he just seems off, gazing at the void, speaking slowly…” (sic)
The Friends Reunion is airing on Thursday 27 May on HBO.
