Love Island’s Joe Garratt wants to ‘explain everything’ to Lucie Donlan’s mum

Love Island's Joe Garratt has opened up about his hopes to continue a relationship with Lucie Donlon when she leaves the villa – but admits he needs to talk to her mum first.

Joe, 22, became the latest castmate to be dumped from the show and has faced a strong backlash from viewers who have accused him of trying to 'control' surfer Lucie and driving her to tears.

Refusing to apologise f or his behaviour, a defiant Joe says he had Lucie's best interests at heart and will be waiting for her on the outside until her time on the show is up.

"Hopefully we can reunite when she comes out. I don’t want her to quit,” he told The Sun.

But before then, Joe said he's going to reach out to Lucie's family in Newqay.

The Sandwich maker said he wants to sit them down and explain everything.

"I just hope that they can see who I really am,” he said. “After I speak to them I am sure they will understand.”

Since leaving the show, Joe has discovered that Lucie's mum got in touch with his own relatives to say she's 'heartbroken' 'Jucie' were split up.

But nobody is more sad about the break-up than Joe who said he's 'gutted' to be apart from the blonde surfer.

Joe and Lucie found themselves at the mercy of the public after their co-stars voted them the least compatible pairing.

The decision was influenced by a series of awkward conversations and tearful displays from Lucie.

The scenes sparked more than 600 complaints to Ofcom while charity Women's Aid even spoke out on the matter.

Responding to the criticism, Joe said: "I am not going to say sorry. I may have worded things wrong and the cameras are on you 24/7. I may have slipped up a bit but I am only human."

He added: "I didn't manipulate or abuse [Lucie] and I'm gutted it's been perceived that way."

Last night Lucie was seen dhaving a tough time on deciding whether to continue on with the show alone or leave to be with Joe.

It's understood that after talking things through with a resident physiologist on the show, Lucie won't be leaving the villa.

Love Island continues tonight on ITV2 at 9pm
