Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have become one of reality TV’s biggest power couples, but there was a time when no one thought their love would last. Kardashian had been married twice before when she started dating West, who had a reputation for being unpredictable, temperamental, and difficult to be around.
Still, the two became inseparable and over fifteen years after their initial meeting, they have created a beautiful life and family together. Let’s start from the beginning and recap West and Kardashian‘s initial courtship and eventual marriage.
When did Kim Kardashian meet Kanye West?
In 2003, Keeping Up with the Kardashians had yet to air on E! and the Kardashian family was best known for their celebrity friendships. Kardashian was Paris Hilton’s friend and stylist, and it was during that time that she first met West. They spent a great deal of time together, but always in a platonic sense. West even recruited Kardashian to appear in a comedy sketch show of his called Alligator Boots.
After the sketch, West’s crush on Kardashian slowly started becoming more apparent. In 2009, he wrote some lyrics that seemed to be about Kardashian, referring to her as the “cheerleader of my dreams.” West also became good friends with the rest of the Kardashian family, making occasional appearances on Keeping Up with the Kardashians — always as Kim Kardashian’s “good friend.”
In 2011, Kardashian married basketball player Kris Humphries in a whirlwind ceremony that had everyone a bit shell-shocked. Including, apparently, West, who wrote some song lyrics about how he “fell in love with Kim, around the time she fell in love with him.” Fortunately, West wouldn’t have to wait much longer to declare his love to Kardashian in person.
Kim Kardashian made the first move
Seventy-two days after Kardashian married Humphries, the two split. While many people ranted that the whole marriage was a publicity stunt, Kardashian shrugged off the naysayers by saying that she married too quickly and that she was no longer in love with Humphries. It is not certain when exactly Kardashian first started to think of West during her divorce proceedings, but in a later interview, she admitted that she didn’t wait long to reach out.
“I thought he would call me as soon as he knew that I was single again,” Kardashian said. When her phone didn’t ring, she dialed him up, and it was as though they never stopped talking.
Only a short time after they reconnected, Kardashian and West started dating. From vacations to hanging out with the Kardashian family, the two were seen everywhere together. Things moved fast from that point on for the couple, and by December 2012, they announced that they were expecting their first child together. In June 2013, West and Kardashian welcomed their daughter, North West.
When did Kim Kardashian and Kanye West get married?
Though they were happy with their new family, West and Kardashian wanted to make things official between them. In October 2013, West proposed to Kardashian in grand fashion, renting out a baseball stadium and presenting her with a stunning ring, with her whole family watching. Less than a year later, in May of 2014, Kardashian and West got married in a beautiful ceremony in Florence, Italy.
Five years later, Kardashian and West have welcomed three more children: Saint, Chicago, and Psalm. They have grown stronger as a couple, weathering tabloid controversies and personal struggles alike. For Kardashian and West, their path to true love might have been unconventional, but it has definitely worked for them.
