JoJo Siwa Admits Telling Her Mom to Take Off Her Signature Bow ‘Was Harder’ Than Coming Out

Of her decision to ditch her trademark hairstyle, the ‘Dance Moms’ alum admits that she feels it’s ‘the right time’ to do ‘something different’ and to have ‘a little bit more mature’ upgrade.

AceShowbizJoJo Siwa has spoken out about her decision to take off her signature bow. Addressing her big life decision in a new interview, the former “Dance Moms” star admitted that telling her mom Jessalynn Siwa to change her look “was harder” than coming out.

During an Instagram and Facebook Creator Week conversation with Adam Mosseri on Tuesday, June 9, the 18-year-old revealed that telling her mother to change her trademark hairstyle was a lot more difficult than coming out as LGBTQ+. She claimed, “I was like, ‘It surprisingly was harder to tell [my mom] that I wanted to wear my hair different,’ ” after her mom asked her which one was harder to tell between changing her hairstyle or opening up about her sexuality.

Though JoJo had decided to ditch her trademark bow, she still said that “the bow is still a part of my life.” The Nickelodeon star went on to explain, “I still love bows, I forever will. They’re who I am, but maybe I won’t wear it every day.”

On the reasons why she wanted to part herself from her colorful big bow, the star stated, “I just had my 18th birthday and it was right around my birthday that I realized, ‘I kinda wanna do my hair different today.’ ” She also pointed out that she “came out to the world and to [her] family and essentially to [herself].” Elaborating further, she told the Instagram head, Adam, “It just felt like the right time and to do something different and to do something maybe a little bit more mature or a little upgrade.”

In January, JoJo came out publicly as gay. At the time, she took to her Instagram page to share a nearly 15-minute video in which she said that she is “technically” pansexual but also comfortable identifying as gay. A month after, the “Kid in a Candy Store” singer made her relationship with her girlfriend Kylie Prew Instagram official with a photo of them holding hands.

JoJo opened up about her gender identity to PEOPLE in April, saying, “I still don’t know what I am. It’s like, I want to figure it out. And I have this joke. Her name is Kylie. And so I say that I’m ‘Ky-sexual.’ ” Offering more details, she told the outlet, “But like, I don’t know, bisexual, pansexual, queer, lesbian, gay, straight. I always just say gay because it just kind of covers it or queer because I think the keyword is cool.”

“I like queer,” she confessed. “Technically I would say that I am pansexual because that’s how I have always been my whole life is just like, my human is my human.”
