The US journalist is a vocal supporter of the Sussexes and is known to be within their inner circle. Since Meghan and Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey last month, King has been increasingly vocal in her defence of the couple. The 66-year-old claimed the tell-all, which was watched by 49.1 million people worldwide, “opened up conversations” the public “were not prepared to have”.

King and Meghan grew close after the Royal Wedding, which the star covered for the broadcaster CBS.

She was among 20 guests invited to the Duchess’ baby shower in New York, where she and others made flower arrangements for the then-mother-to-be.

The journalist gave insight into the goings-on of the secretive event despite branding Meghan as a “very private person”.

But when asked about the present she bought for the royal baby, Archie Harrison, she was teasingly tight-lipped.

King, who described her gift as “very nice”, added: “If I told you, you know I would have to kill you.”

The TV star has come under fire for her support of the Sussexes and was branded their “PR mouthpiece” last month by Piers Morgan.

On Twitter, he slammed her for helping to “facilitate their ongoing public trashing of our Royal Family”.

Piers believed she was not “doing” her “job as a journalist” by allegedly not “asking them about all the lies they told” Oprah.

JUST IN: Gayle King claimed Meghan and Harry would ‘do things differently’

King has praised the Sussexes’ decisions and on a number of occasions gave behind-the-scenes insight into the difficulties they faced.

Some will have questioned whether the “very private” Meghan would have been happy with the remarks.

The Sussexes notably demanded their privacy be respected last year after choosing to leave senior royal roles.

Following the fallout of Megxit, King spoke out about their decision to quit the Firm several times.

She noted that Harry “did not make that decision in a vacuum” and suggested it was not a snap-decision from the couple.

King disputed claims that the Sussexes “blindsided the Queen” and other Royal Family members.

She told CBS last year that “there were a lot of conversations” before their decision was made.

King went further to note it was “very unfair” that some believed they had not spoken to the Firm before the announcement.

She was joined by fellow US star and close pal Oprah, who said she supported the Sussexes “1,000 percent”.

King, who echoed the US mega star’s words, said she was “pulling for them 100 percent” and believed the decision was “best for them”.

In a 2018 episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, she backed the couple again by stating she “loved” a “good love story” ahead of the royal wedding.

Royal Family 'wants to be united' says Gayle King

She outed herself as a longtime royalist when she revealed she “got up at four am” to watch Princess Diana’s wedding and “unfortunately” her funeral.

King branded Harry “a little mischievous” since his mother’s death and noted that he “had his scrapes” and “some issues”.

She felt it was “nice to see him as a grown-a** man in love with someone who is very unexpected”.

King refuted Colbert’s claim that the Royal Family was “just a tourist trap” and “an affront to everything this country stands for” – referring to the US.

She called him a “cranky American” and stated it was Britain’s “culture” before speaking out about why the future Duchess was “unexpected”.

King said: “So look at Meghan Markle – she’s biracial, she’s older, she’s 36 he’s 33, she’s divorced, she was a working actress.

“So all of the things you would think the Royal Family would be [disapproving sounds].

“It’s so unexpected but they really have embraced her and I think it’s great.”

This week, King sparked a sexism row after questioning why Princess Anne was in the procession at Prince Philip’s funeral.

She claimed it broke royal tradition as typically only men followed the casket, which caused a stir online.
