Father Ted comedian Brendan Grace 'fighting for life' amid cancer battle

Father Ted star, Brendan Grace, has been receiving treatment in hospital for what has been reported as a life-threatening battle with cancer.

The 68-year-old actor has been receiving treatment for a month now, after first contracting pneumonia.

According to reps for the comedian, he was then diagnosed with cancer with multiple outlets claiming he has lung cancer.

A spokesperson for the star said this week: ‘Brendan Grace has been in hospital for the last four weeks receiving treatment for pneumonia.

‘It has now transpired that he is also suffering from cancer for which he is receiving ongoing care and treatment.

‘His family are a great support to him at this difficult time and respect for their privacy would be much appreciated.’

The comedian has been forced to cancel his latest round of shows, with this reps adding to The Irish Mirror: ‘His current July/August Irish Tour has been cancelled.

‘Brendan is still in hospital and will be remaining there for ongoing treatment.

‘He is hospitalised in Ireland.’

The Irish actor starred as Father Finton Stack in the Channel Four comedy in 1996, and has lived in the US for the latter part of his career alongside wife Eileen.

Also a singer, Brendan had several hit songs including Cushie Butterfield, Combine Harvester and The Dutchman.

He’s suffered various health setbacks over the years, suffering a stroke that left him ‘looking under the influence’ as well as losing some of his toes as a result of gangrene caused by diabetes.

Previously addressing his diagnosis on RTE documentary, Brendan Grace: Funny Man, Brendan said: ‘I got diabetes, it was a bit of a blow to me. Eileen often said to me about the diabetes, that she wished it was her who get it because she would be better able to discipline herself into the right things to do, whereas I’m inclined to throw caution to the wind.

‘I’ve stopped playing the guitar because I had to use pressure on my fingers for the guitar and I don’t use a guitar on stage now.’

He’s been married to wife Eileen for 45 years and the two share four children.

Speaking of his love on his show, Brendan said: ‘My very best friend is Eileen, there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for her and there’s nothing she wouldn’t do for me, and that’s how it’s been for the past 45 years. Doing nothing for each other.’
