Fans are obsessing over one part of Taylor Swift‘s performance during the Amazon Prime Day concert on Wednesday where she appeared to shade Scooter Braun as part of their ongoing feud.
The 29-year-old pop star performed her 2014 hit “Shake It Off,” which includes the lyrics, “Just think while you’ve been getting down and out about the liars and the dirty, dirty cheats in the world, you could have been getting down to this sick beat.”
Swifties noticed immediately that she seemed to really emphasize the words “the liars and the dirty, dirty cheats in the world” and have taken this to mean she was referring to Braun, who recently acquired her former record label, Big Machine Records, from CEO Scott Borchetta — prompting her to lash out in a fiery Tumblr post. Swift didn’t specifically name names during her performance.
“Pretty sure she’s talking to you @scooterbraun,” one fan tweeted alongside a video of the talked-about moment.
“TAYLOR REALLT [sic] SAID F SCOTT AND SCOOTER DURING SHAKE IT OFF HUH #PrimeDayConcert,” tweeted another.
Although she has a passionate defense from her fans, Swift is facing a hard time with music insiders who believe she’s “playing victim” in her public battle with Braun and Borchetta, which began when she fired off a Tumblr post expressing her disgust with the fact that Braun, who she described as a “bully,” acquired her work.
A separate insider also told Page Six that Swift had various opportunities to purchase her masters but “decided to walk away.”
“In the 10 months since [the deal was made], she hasn’t reached out once, so how passionate could she have been about them?” the insider said.
Swift’s lawyer, Donald Passman, has said, “[Big Machine CEO] Scott Borchetta never gave Taylor Swift an opportunity to purchase her masters, or the label, outright with a check in the way he is now apparently doing for others.”
