Great British Menu judge turned host, Andi Oliver, 57, has become well known on the BBC show for her eccentric outfits, infectious personality and her infamous paper fans. With viewers wondering why the presenter always carries one around with her, she has now given the real reason behind her most talked about accessory.
That’s a menopause thing!
In a new interview, Andi revealed there’s a specific purpose for the hand held fan.
“That’s a menopause thing,” she giggled.
“At any second I could go into a major hot flush.”
But it isn’t just the fact she carried the surprising accompaniment with her, viewers also love how the colours and patterns of the paper compliment her amazing outfits.
“If I’m going to have a fan,” she said, “It has to be fabulous and set off my whole outfit!”
The chef joined the show in 2017 as a judge before she retuned in the latest series as a presenter.
Speaking on the role transition, she admitted she had to be “persuaded” to do it.
Despite her love for being a critic on the show, she realised she could still do a bit of both by working with the other chefs throughout the process as a host.
“Patrick Holland, who runs BBC2, had to talk me into it because I loved being a judge,” she told Radio Times.
“But now I love presenting because I work closely with the chefs and can watch the evolution of each dish.”
She added: “I’m naturally maternal so it’s lovely to support the chefs through a really challenging process.”
Even though she’s now very into the swing of things, there was a hint of nerves when her first episode aired four years ago.
“20 minutes before the first episode went out, I got so nervous,” she recalled.
“I was acutely aware of the ownership people feel about Great British Menu, as it’s been running for 16 series.”
But Andi remains gracious and has since become something of a fashion icon with her range of sensational outfits.
“I’m lucky the fans received me with open arms,” she said.
