George RR Martin’s latest blog update arrived this week headed by an image saying “Winter Is Coming”. It’s not clear if this is the 72-year-old’s way of teasing that he’s approaching the finishing line, but the rest of his post may provide some clues nonetheless. Titled Not A Blogging, the Game of Thrones creator reflected on how his blog has become something he feels obliged to do and admitted: “When a lot of stuff happens very fast, I fall further and further behind.”

George RR Martin continued: “I am hugely behind right now, and the prospect of trying to catch up is feeling increasingly oppressive.”

While some fans may be concerned he’s referring to The Winds of Winter, he did also mention some positive things have been happening too.

Nevertheless, it’s not clear if the author was putting his progress on the long-delayed book into the “good” or “bad” camps that he outlined further on.

He wrote: “My life has become one of extremes these past few months.”

Martin added: “Some days I do not know whether to laugh or cry, to shoot off fireworks and dance in the streets or crawl back into bed and pull the covers over my head.

“The good stuff that has been happening to me has been very very very good, the kind of thing that will make a year, or a career.

“But the bad stuff that is happening has been very very very bad, and it is hard to cherish the good and feel the joy when the shadows are all around.”

The author did give away the fact that he has a new five year deal with HBO to create Game of Thrones successor shows is “my good news”.

While Martin also updated fans that he’s now fully vaccinated saying: “Hurrah, hurray, that’s good.”

However, the 72-year-old also shared he’s mourning the loss of six friends since November, while a seventh is “in hospital, very sick, recovering from surgery.”

On his other projects, the author wrote: “There’s lots more going on as well. Meow Wolf stuff. Railroad stuff. Beastly Books has reopened, but the JCC is still shuttered. The Jets traded Sam Darnold away.

“I am going to be leaving my cabin in a couple of months. I am close to delivering  PAIRING UP, a brand new Wild Cards book.”

While it’s unclear how Martin feels about his progress on The Winds of Winter, the fact that he shared the Winter is Coming image and revealed he’s leaving his cabin where he’s been writing the book, could be a good sign that completion is near.

However, until the author shares a bit more, fans will be left speculating on how the novel’s going – one which he hopes to complete this year.

Martin concluded: “I will tell you about some of this, I guess. But not today.”

While he also signed off with a current mood of: “Tired.”

Interestingly, ASOIAF expert BryndenBFish appears to be leaning on the hope that Martin is in fact nearly done with writing The Winds of Winter.

He tweeted: “That’s neat that George is leaving the cabin in a few months. Good for him.

“Hey wait … what’s up with that icon at the top of the post?”

Whatever the case, here’s hoping the wait isn’t much longer. After all, Martin’s got A Dream of Spring to tackle next.
